Volunteer Opportunity

There are two exciting volunteer opportunities related to the Building Better Futures Program. This program supports TC Williams students as they prepare for college. Many of these students will be the first in their families to attend college. If you have any questions about the program, or would like to volunteer for the program, please e-mail Emily Passmore, Programs Chair, at emily.passmore@gmail.com.

LEEP Mentor is a minimum of a year-long commitment being paired with one student, likely a sophomore or a junior. It involves meeting with the student once or twice a month and communicating with her over e-mail or by phone during the interim periods. The role of the mentor is to discuss and provide guidance on future plans, goals, college, majors, etc. Mostly, it’s to provide positive female role models and influences. There will be an information session for mentors on October 20th at 7:00 p.m. at the Campagna Center.

If the mentor is too much of a time commitment, we are starting a program to proofread resumes and essays for students. We will be setting up an e-mail list to distribute the essays and resumes. We will coordinate with the Building Better Futures staff to ensure that the essays are provided early enough to review. You will be able to either e-mail feedback to the student or if your schedule permits, you can meet with the student in person to discuss their feedback. Many of these students do not have parents at home that are able to provide support preparing applications. Since applications for college are due in early January, this will only be a small time commitment for the next few months. If you are signing up to be a proofreader, please let Emily know if you will be available to provide feedback in person or over e-mail.

Both of these are great opportunities to help young women who are eager to learn about college, universities and the world post college.
